1967 SS12
GE,
I am about to begin restoring our SS12, I want to take the engine apart and send it off to be cleaned and bored like a car engine, was wondering if anybody has experience with that?

Re: 1967 SS12
going to jump in on this, steve, aint no expert by no means but can give a couple guidelines for you.
> does the engine need rebuilt ?
> if so do you already have a small engine shop that can do the work ?
> if it does need bored you will have to have a piston to give to them to bore to.
the crankshaft, rod, valves, valve springs, bearings, ect. will also have to be checked to tolerence specs.
> these parts are a getting to be a bit pricey from sears if available, in my opinion, but you can find parts online.
> hope this helps, please post your progress good or bad with your tractor and ask questions when needed.

Re: 1967 SS12
I'm not totally sure if it does or not, it sat up for MANY years in the Indiana weather, then we changed the oil and started it.. And then we 'thought' it seized up, but turns out that it wasn't.
I am thinking that regardless of whether or not it may need it, being that it sat outside for so long I'm wanting to just do a full rebuild.

rebuilding
With my experiances, if you plan on keeping the tractor, and its worn but stil runs, rebuild it why you still can, cause if it does decide it wants to seize or blow up it cost more to repair and parts damanged in the process are most of the time alot more expencive and could have been prevented.

Rebuilding
I tend to agree with SS12. As time passes, some parts may become more difficult to source making a rebuild then more challenging. I would try to find out if the motor is worn.
Before tearing into it, perhaps consider a good inspection:
I am finding on another garden tractor (non-Sears) that it is getting difficult to keep it running as parts sources are drying up.
Good luck and let us know how you fare.
Before tearing into it, perhaps consider a good inspection:
- Consider a leak down test in addition to a compression test.
- Check and analyze your oil closely for any metal, etc...
- When you run it, any smoke/knocks/leaks/power issues?
