GT 19.9 onan will not turn over
Hell-o. I just installed a new battery to my Onan 19.9 engine model # 917.2570780. When I turn the key, all I get is a noise, not really a clicking, but almost. Just a noise, the engine does not turn over. I know the engine is not seized up. Too, several years ago I found a cone shaped brass inline fuel filter. I took it out and cleaned it. Now these years later I can not find it to clean it again. Please, can anybody help me with these two problems....thanks

Re: Onan 19.9 Not Starting
HI
CONECTIONS,CONECTIONS, AFTER ALL ARE CHECKED & CLEANED TEST YOUR NEW BATTERY & IF THE NEW BATTERY IS NOT MORE THAN 300 COLD CRANKING AMPS CARRY IT BACK AND TRADE, BECAUSE YOU HAVE A MAN SIZED MOTOR TO CRANK NOT A TOY, AFTER ALL CONECTIONS ARE CLEANED & STILL SAME, YOU MAY TRY TAPPING ON STARTER WHILE HOLDING KEY IN START POSITION TO MAYBE HELP MAKE STARTER BRUSHES MAKE CONTACT ON ARMATURE, YOU HAVE AT LEAST 2 SAFETY SWITCHES & A START SOLONOID TO CHECK FOR BEING IN GOOD WORKING ORDER. WHAT KIND OF MACHINE IS THIS MOTOR ON. KEEP ME POSTED IF YOU WANT ME TO WALK YOU THROUGH REPAIRING YOUR PROBLEM, FOLLOW FUEL LINE TO FUEL FILTER.
GOOD LUCK

thanks
Thanks for responding South Georgia Jimmy. This hoss of an engine sits in a 78 Sears GT, a snot larger than mine. I did not spend much time yesterday with my Dad's old pride and joy. The new battery is a 325 CCA. I hooked a battery charger to said battery and hit the rapid start only to get the same almost a clicking noise. This tractor, as you may know is very tight to work on. I took a fast glance searching for the starter, and even tracked the hot cable until it disappeared. I am assuming the solonoid is attached to the starter or it is hidden as well, lol I will hopefully take a lot more time later this week to follow up on cleaning connections. I found two fuses that were not blown. I know there is one safety switch on the PTO pedal which I did have set correctly. I fear the mowing deck will have to come off for greater access. I shall keep you informed and will not hesitate to ask for your wisdom..........thanks

"UP DATE" on Onan 19.9 GT
WOW. The deck is out from under my Sears GT. I located the starter. Removed and cleaned the connection of big red wire to starter (did not really need cleaned, but). I re-hooked the neg. wire back to the 340 CCA battery (not 325) and she did not start. Still like a grinding noise. I tied the clutch pedal down, got underneath with a hammer handle, turned key and rapped on starter about 30-40 times, still not starting. There is a 1/4" metal plate just under the starter and extends to the right side of frame that will have to be removed if starter is bad. Oh yea, I traced the fuel line back to the tank. I did not find the small cone shaped, brass, screen filter that I must of seen in a dream lol It does appear that maybe the fuel line turns abrubtly from bottom of tank towards engine. I hope I have explained well enough what tractor I am working on. She looks like the photo on this home page, a 1978. At least that is when she was bought. Will you please advice me of my next encounter. Thanks

Re: Onan 19.9 Not Starting
HI
DON'T START TAKING PARTS OFF JUST YET. NO PANEL TO REMOVE FOR STARTER REMOVAL. TO REMOVE THE STARTER YOU WILL NEED TO REMOVE THE FLYWHEEL BLOWER HOUSING (COVER) NOT FLYWHEEL. FIRST GO PURCHASE A TEST LIGHT, CLIP ON TO A GOOD GROUND, STICK TO POSITIVE BATTERY TERMINAL TO BE SURE IT IS OPERATING OK, NEXT STICK TO POS. (RED) CABLE AT STARTER AND TURN SWITCH TO FIND IF POWER IS REACHING STARTER, LISTEN WHERE NOISE IS COMING FROM AND THEN EMAIL ME AT flatcreekdyl@windstream.net I HAVE 4 EXACTLY LIKE THE ONE YOU ARE WORKING ON THAT I HAVE RESTORED
HANG IN THERE
