Custom 8 & 10 rear axle repair info wanted
I am considering rebuilding my 8 E's transaxle, (first gear skips and grinds). Does anyone know where I can find a repair manual. If not does anyone have for sale a rear axle? I have a # 51996 TYPE: 633A46 transaxle. I can be reached at donparadowski@yahoo.com
Thanks.
Thanks.

CUSTOM 8 & 10 REAR AXEL/ TRANS REPAIR
HI
I HATE TO BE THE BEARER OF BAD NEWS BUT I DON'T THINK YOU WOULD GET THE GEARS YOU NEED TO REP. THE TRANS. IF YOU HAD A MANUEL & TORE IT APART. A USE UNIT IS THE BEST BET. I JUST REPAIRED ONE WITH A BAD FIRST & REVERSE GEAR, HAD A TRANS. THAT HAD SET WITH WATER IN IT FOR YEARS, WAS ABLE TO RESQUE THE UPPER GEARS TO FIX THE STRIPPED FIRST GEAR. THE STRIPPED FIRST GEAR COMES FROM CLUTCH NOT RELEASING AND GRINDING IT INTO FIRST AND REVERSE, NOT MUCH MATERIAL THERE TO GRIND ON. SHIFT BOOT AND SEALS ARE AVAILABLE FROM SEARS.
GOOD LUCK
JIMMY

Re: Custom 8 & 10 rear axle repair info wanted
Jim,
Your thoughts are my sentiments also. I am so good at gears and bearings that I thought it might be fun to do one. I assumed the replacement gears would be the real problem. I already have sights on several eBay auctions and I only wished I kept an old tranny that I junked many years ago. It would have made a perfect donor for parts. By the way, do you know how much transmission oil goes into those gear boxes?

THESE TRANS. HOLD 5 QTS.FACTORY SAYS USE 30WT. NON DETERGENT, BUT WITH ALL THE AGE AND WEAR I SEE WHAT HEAVER WEIGHT WOULD HURT, HAVE SEEN SOME WITH 90WT.GEAR OIL.IN MY EVER DAY WORK MACHINE I AM USING HYDROSTAT TRANS.FLUID, SEEMS ABOUT 30WT. SURE TO BE BETTER LUBRICATION THAN THE OIL MADE IN 1970. TEAR DOWN AND REASSEMBLE IS FAIRLY SIMPLE, PARTS WILL ONLY FIT IN ONE PLACE.donparadowski wrote:Jim,
