I'm curious if anyone has had good success repowering their ss 12 or st 16. I have several tractors with tired engines and am considering new engines rather than rebuilding the old ones.
I feel that 12hp is a bit underpowered so 16 hp is my choice. There are many to choose from and I am looking for the best replacement for my money.

Depending on the year of your tractor you should have no trouble, I believe most SS and ST series were built by Roper. As the tractors sold under the Roper name had Briggs engines, the older series Briggs engines should bolt right on. I re-powered my ST-12 with an 18hp Tecumseh OHV and had no problems with engine clearances or belt line up issues, however the old transmission built for a 12 did not do well with a 50% increase in torque, especially with ground engagement tools.
