I just purchased a SS 12
Here is what I know:
Sears SS 12 model 917.25311 model 6301 3 SPEED transaxle with Hi/Lo;
MOTOR
Model 143-582132
serial 875 08598
12 HP.
No attachments, hood, grill, air cleaner, gas tank straps, or manual. I'd like to date and fully ID the machine. I believe it has a DB transaxle.
To start, I need to clean the gas tank because loose rust is making it to the carb. I am looking for a mower, front plow, snow thrower.
As soon as I get it up an running, I will be selling my 8 E with a low mileage ten hp motor, and several of it's attachments.
I can be reached directly at donparadowski@yahoo.com

Re: I just purchased a SS 12
It should be a 1968. If you don't have a manual you can download one at http://www.searstractormanuals.com/
Good luck,

I hear these are somewhat of a collectors item and the original motor is a big thing. Yes? No?

Tecumseh
That is the engine model number in the Sears Super 12 Parts list that I have which is dated 10.1.68. So it could be original to the tractor.

Re: I just purchased a SS 12
There are collectible to the people that like them. There not like a 65 mustang where everyone knows what they are and what they have. To me a Sears suburban is a collectable machine that I use on a daily basis and enjoy tinkering and keeping it running better and doing more work than the neighbors 2000 dollar John Deere mower lol. But to the neighbors my suburban is junk. It all just depends on what u like

Should ever the motor need rebuilding, does the cam ride on bearings or does it simply be captured by the block and in in fact wearing an oblong hole in the block?

Hi , Don , the cam rides in / on what appears to be bronze sleeves that are press fit into blind holes cast in the side cover and block and is captured in place between the two assembled . personally don't know the quality / grade of the bronze material used , and looking at sears parts list do not see any part reference available that i can tell . hope this helps > Tim

Tim,
If I need to replace I would go to my local supplier of Oilite or Super Oilite bushings. They would probably work just fine. Thanks.
