P224 IN A 1978 GT18
HEY GUYS
HAS ANY ONE SEEN OR KNOW OF ANYONE TRANSPLANTING A P224 INTO GT18, I HAVE IT TEMP. SETTING ON THE FRAME, SURE IS GOING TO BE A TIGHT FIT, 224 STARTER IN ON LOWER FRONT SO IT RUNS INTO THE GRILL MOUNT WILL EXTEND THE MOUNT ABOUT 1 1/2" AND SEE HOW THE HOOD FITS MAY NOT GET A HOOD, WILL RUN JUST AS WELL, THIS IS LIKE SHOE SPOONING A 427 CHEVY INTO 57 BELAIR, WILL BE FULL, ROPER MANAGED TO GET THE 19.9 WHICH IS BASICALLY THE SAME SIZE OF THE 224,WHICH IS 2" LONGER & 1" TALLER THAT THE 16-18-20 HP INTO SUBURBANS, BUT THEY USED A BIT DIFFERENT BLOWER COVER, A WHILE BACK I PULLED ALMOST THE SAME DEAL, WAS RESTORING A GT18 WITH A DESTROYED PLASTIC DASH, HAD A FRESH NEWER MODEL P220, REPLACED THE DASH WITH A CAST ALUMINUM FROM A ROPER THE SAME DASH AS THE FIBERGLASS ONES, BY THE TIME THE MOTOR FINALLY GOT BOLTED IN THE REAR SPARK PLUG WAS UNDER THE BATTERY BOX WITH AN ANGLE BOOT & A NICE ROUND HOLE CUT IN TRAY, NOW TO CHANGE THE PLUG TAKE OUT BATTERY, LIFT PLASTIC TRAY, THE PLASTIC DASHES ALLOWED THE SWITCHES AND GAGES TO BE CLOSER TO THE STEERING WHEEL, SO BATTERY TRAY COULD BE MOVED BACK FOR ENGINE CLEARANCE.I AM USING THE REPAIRED PLASTIC DASH THIS TIME, BUT STILL LOOKS TO BE TIGHT, ANYONE WHO HAS TORN DOWN A SUBURBAN KNOWS HOW THE STEERING WHEEL WILL RUST ON, TO BE ABLE TO SALVAGE THE WHEEL I HAD BEEN CUTTING THE SHAFT THROUGH HE RUBBER BUSHING BELOW THE WHEEL, PRESS THE PIECE OF SHAFT OUT AND RE WELD, THIS TIME HAD EVER THING STRIPPED DOWN TO THE STEERING WHEEL AND REAR FRAME, ROLLED IT OVER GROUND OF BIT OF WELD HOLDING GEAR ON PUCHED SHAFT OUT, PRESSED APART WELDED GEAR BACK ON GOOD AS EVER IN A SHORT BIT OF TIME.
HAVE A GOOD ONE

Re: P224 IN A 1978 GT18
I have also wondered if the P224 would fit in my tractor. Did you continue with your project. I had planed to unbolt the frame and lengthen it by 5" to give me the extra room. Please let us know if you make any progress.

P224 IN A 1977-78-79 GT18
HI
YES I FINISHED THE PROJECT, REALLY WORKED OUT WELL. NO MOD TO THE FRAME IF YOU HAVE A 1977-79 WITH PLASTIC DASH, WILL EXPLAIN, STARTING IN 1977 SOMEONE KNEW THE BIG BLOCK WOULD BE USED SO THEY REDESIGNED THE DASH TO BE ABLE TO MOVE THE BATTERY BACK ABOUT AN INCH AND A BIT,TRIMMED THE BATTERY BOX SUPPORT ON LEFT SIDE AT VOLT REG.TO BE ABLE TO GET THE EXTRA INCH THE MOTOR NEEDED, SO WHEN THE 19.9 WOULD FIT SO WOULD THE 24-26 HP, MY MOTOR CAME WITH THE 3-4 QT OIL PAN, GOT ONE OFF OF A CRAFTSMAN GT20, JD WILL BE THE SAME, YOURS MAY HAVE THE SMALLER OIL PAN ALREADY, THE STARTER IS BLOCK MOUNTED TO THE FRONT AND THE SOLONOID WILL HIT THE LOWER GRILL SUPPORT, NO PROBLEM MAKE A FLAT PLATE IN PLACE OF THE ANGLE SHAPED MOUNT WITH TWO SPACERS ABOUT 1' TALL TO MOUNT THE GRILL DOWN ON, ALL FRONT GRILL CLEARANCE IS GOOD, AIR CLEANER HAS ROOM, I LUCKED UP WITH A PAIR OF MUFFLERS OFF A 19.9, YOU WILL JUST HAVE TO WORK UP SOME EXHAUST. IF YOU HAVE AN OLDER MODEL WITH AN ONAN YOU CAN SQUIRREL IT IN THERE BY TRIMMING THE BATTERY BOX SUPPORT ON LEFT AND MOVE THE BATTERY BOX BACK ABOUT AN INCH, I THINK THERE IS HOLES TO ADJUST THAT.
