Sears Super 12 Engine Swap
New to this great site and hope one of you more knowledgeable Sears Super 12 experts can answer an engine swap question for me.
I just acquired a very nice Super 12 model 917.25311 but the engine was missing. I have a Tecumseh engine model HH120-120045C that I would like to install on the Super12 but this engine has a built in starter where as the original tractor set up is a belt driven starter/generator. What would be the easiest way to get this engine to work? Should I go with the original type set up starter/generator or go with the built in starter and generating system?
Thanks for any help!!!

RE:SEARS SUPER 12 ENGINE SWAP
HI GLEN & WELCOME TO THE SEARS SITE.
WILL GIVE YOU MY OPINION FOR WHAT IT IS WORTH. THE GEAR DRIVEN STARTER IS THE BEST WAY TO GO. HAD A STARTER-GENERATOR SHOP TELL ME DELCO BUILT A COMBO. STARTER-GENERATOR THAT IS NOT VERY GOOD FOR EITHER. THIS SHOULD BE A VERY SIMPLE SWAP, HOPE YOU HAVE THE PULLY & BELT GUIDE-GUARD, ALSO THE THROTTLE CABLE LOOPS UNDER THE BLOWER COVER. THERE IS NOTHING TO CHANGE ON THE WIRING TO MAKE THE ENGINE START & RUN, STARTER CABLE & KILL WIRE, IF YOU WANT THE CHARGING SYSTEM TO WORK YOU WILL NEED TO REPLACE THE VOLT.REG. & A SMALL AMOUNT OF WIRING. IF THE IGNITION SWITCH HAS NOT BEEN CHANGED & STARTER SOLONOID ADDED YOU MAY WANT TO THINK ABOUT DOING SO, FAIRLY INEXPENSIVE & EASY. TALKING ABOUT IF YOUR BATTERY CABLES RUN TO THE IGN.SWITCH, THOSE IGN. SWITCHES WITH THE TWO HEAVY TERMINALS ARE A BIT SCARCE. I THIN THIS WAS DISCUSSED IN THE PAST FEW DAYS, CHECH THE POST. SOMEONE MAY HAVE MORE THOUGHTS ON THIS THAN ME. HAVE DONE A FEW, I HAVE A NEIGHBOR WANTING A STARTER SOLONOID & SWITCH CHANGE SOON AS WARMS UP A BIT. WARNING DON'T FOR ANY REASON LET 12 VOLT GET CONNECTED TO THE IGNITION KILL WIRE, WILL KILL THE COIL, ASSUMING YOU HAVE SOLID STATE IGNITION NOT POINT IGN. PRICE A USED ONE ON EBAY TO SEE WHY.
HAVE A GOOD ONE

Re: Sears Super 12 Engine Swap
Thank you Jimmy,
I was hoping the gear starter was the way to go. The ignition switch on this tractor is original so I will remove it and add a new one along with a starter solenoid and wiring upgrade. I think I'm ok with that portion now but not real clear on hooking up the charging system. The engine has a pigtail coming out of the housing with three wires in a three terminal connector. Would those wire connect to the original voltage regulator?

RE: DUPER 12 ENGINE SWAP
HI
THE THREE WIRE PIGTAIL FROM BEHIND THE FLYWHEEL HAS TWO LARGER OUTER & A SMALLER CENTER WIRE, THE CENTER WIRE IS THE IGN. KILL WIRE. YOU WILL NEED T GET A (VOLT.REG./RECTIFIER) IT WILL HAVE THREE PLUG ON TERMINALS 2 WILL BE MARKED (R I THINK) THE TWO MARKED ALIKE WILL GO TO THE TWO LARGER WIRES FROM BEHIND THE FLYWHEEL, & ONE WILL BE MARKED (B FOR BATTERY) TO BE CONNECTED TO THE AMP METER, THE REG. WILL NEED TO BE GROUNDED GOOD, THAT PART IS VERY SIMPLE. IF THE SWITCH IS GOOD I WOULD USE IT TO ACTIVATE A SOLONOID. CHANGING THE SWITCH IS ANOTHER STORY.
GOOD LUCK
JIMMY
