I have a ss14 with the briggs and stratton 14hp engine. The engine has a broke rod and I would like to rebuild it. Any suggestions on were to find a complete rebuild kit for this engine? I have looked around on the net but can't seem to find anything that would work.

You can still get parts for it off of the BS web site.

ss14 rebuild Empty thanks

Post  bmo73 May 26th 2009, 7:20 pm

I pulled the head and the rod is not the problem, the intake valve is stuck open. The tractor is in really good origianl condition, and I hate to just let it sit. I am going to fix it if I can figure out why the valve is stuck open. I can get it closed and it will open on its own when I turn the engine manually, but it will not close with out help from me. I did fine that I can get a rebuild kit for it (thanks for the help), but I am hopeful that I can fix it without tearing the engine all the way down. Thanks for all the help, I really do appreciate it.

ss14 rebuild Empty a little help

Post  bmo73 May 27th 2009, 7:06 pm

As you can tell from my earlier posts, I am a little new to the small engine. I found the problem is the intake valve is stuck in the open position. I took the hood and grill off the tractor today, and pulled the carb and inspection plate for the valves. Is there a way to get the valve spring off without a spring compressor? I have been trying but just can't seem to get it. I may have to break down and get the right tool. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't think you have to take the valve out unless it is bent. being a flathead motor I don't know how it would get bent. keep soaking the stem under the head with penetrant, turn it over by hand till it opens and is ready to shut and tap it lightly till it closes, keep this up soon it will take less and less effort and start snapping shut when you just touch it. keep this up untill it is good and loose then put the head on and it will start right up. I have several old engines, model A fords steel wheel tractors etc. have had to do this many times. keep us posted.

my dad always filled the engine with marvel mystery oil and let it sit for awhile. marvel in the oil and gas can help prevent and cure this type of problem
