Re.14 or 15 HP. Briggs
Hey Josh
Had this same question a while back, you will need to clean, probable sand, blower cover to read the ID # & ser, #, not very heavely stamped into the metal, possibly behind carb, or on head tin. i have a couple guess I could look, yes all of the old briggs weigh a ton, use the hoist, don't try to lift those heavy monsters.
Good Luck

Re: 14 or 15HP engine ID
well went and looked-couldn't find any numbers anywhere, maybe too much grease/dirt. I noticed a few more clues:
1. full floor boards. 2. correct dash and shifter decals for 71/72 (green/tan).3.large slotted white aluminum grill (my favorite) and white hood with exposed gas cap and guage. fuse located above steering column on dash.4.square head lights.5.no cigarette lighter.6. has a fuel pump.
does this help at all ID a 14 from 15?

Re: 14 Or 15 Hp Briggs
HI JOSH
DON'T THINK ANYONE WILL BE ABLE TO HELP YOU WITHOUT A PHOTO OR TWO, FROM YOUR DISCRIPTION YOU CAN HAVE A 1971 SS14 OR A 1972 SS15 THINK ABOUT THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS DECALS. YOU NEED TO LOOK IN THE TRACTOR ID. AT TOP OF LIST CHOICE TO SEE THE TRACTOR PHOTOS. ABOUT THE BEST I CAN DO FOR NOW.

Re: 14 or 15HP engine ID
every decal is there except the hood ones (14 or 15HP). tractor ID behind shifter is missing. i thought all SS tractors (12,14,or 15hp) had cigarette lighters? I do not know how to post photo's or i would of it.

Re: 14 or 15HP engine ID
josh' going to throw my three cents in the hat. maybe look for briggs engine spec diagrams or parts list or engine manuals. example : tecumseh OH120 and OH140 have the same bore and stroke just different bore carburetors, as with the OH150 and OH160 are the same, OH180 has the same stroke with a bigger bore. may just take the head off take some measurements or find a number on the carburetor and put in a search on the wide world web and see what pops up. any updates on your '66 you have been working on, just wondering ? / tim

Re: 14 or 15HP engine ID
good idea on the carb numbers, i doubt the fella that has it would want me taking the head off. as for the '66, i have to admit i surrendered on the carb issue i was having. i took it a friend's shop who fixes motorcycles and such as a business. told him i would be back for it in the spring. not my proudest moment but i tried everything i could think of or was told and nothing worked. i just know it was something stupid like a pin hole in the intake or...

as far as my '66, the guy i surrendered to couldn't figure it out either! turns out the carb was junk. he put another carb on it with my new carb re-build parts on and it runs great!
