Newbies NEW Sears Oldies ST16 and a bigger one?
Sorry guys, but I am new at this, but looking foraward to learning. I am glad I found the site. I just got my ST16 and the second bigger one???
I have several Questions: Appreciate any direction or suggestions: They both turn over great, but have not tried to start or run them. Oh yea... I paid Zero... and have two more if I want them. They are both Suburbans...
Questions ST16:
Who makes this steel motor???
What are the color codes? for paint. I am planning to totally rebuild this tractor, including an engine rebuild. The reason. It appears that someone put in too deep of a spark plug... and it has gouged the top of piston. Where can I get parts? Tractor Model: 917 25 740 Motor Model # 143 63 0012
Questions LArger Tractor: What is this tractor called? IS it also an ST? It has the twin Oman engine... and it is in really nice shape.
Tracor Model: 917 25 752 Motor Model # M52666c
Are parts avalible for this? How about stickers for the ST model number... does anyone sell those? I want to restore to original if possible? It appears to be in tact and all riginal.. from what I can tell. What is the rack with raise and lower handle... on back of larger tractor??? Thanks for any info and suggestions. Buzz!

it looks like the st16 has the tecumseh engine. the rack on the back of the bigger one is a 3 point hitch. used for attachments(plow, cultivator, tiller, etc.

Sears ST16
The Onan model is usually an SS, the difference being mostly the engine. Sears still has some parts for both. If noone on this site has decals sometimes you can find them on E-bay.

SS and ST 16's
I have the same 2 tractors. The SS/16 I restored a couple years ago. The ST/16 I just finished. Here is before and after photo's I took 2 days ago.

WOW...
Those are two sweet tractors. I have something to shoot for now. Thanks, For the Info. I know its a pain when newbies ask so many dumb questions... but, this is totally new and I am really glad to have found a hobby that my initial investment, was nothing... LOL, that I like alot. Well, I ceratinly have a good direction here... with your two exactly like mine. Are the years the same?? My ST16 is (i think) a 1973 and the SS 16 Oman is a 1974 I believe?? I looked up the numbers?? somewhere and that is what I think the worked out to be? First off,.,. does that sound right... model numbers and the years, just off the cuff? Thanks, Buzz

years

I think your right on the years, Spence has the numbers and years posted on his site. Mine are both 73's. The only thing different between the 73 and 74 SS/16 is the steering wheel. Yours (74) has three spoke's, mine is a 2 spoke, like your ST.
My engines were oilly also but ran good. I think some of the oil is from when they were putting oil in the engine and got it all over. I'm sure they might have a little leak here are there but so far I'm not seeing this. I would run them to see how they are, go from there.
Changing bolts and what not is up to you. My ss/16 I took all a part, sand blasted, with new bolts. The st I took almost all apart, sanded rust down to bare steel, mostly new bolts. If feels good do it. ya know. How far you go is all up to you.
Ebay is a good place to get parts no longer made. It is hit and miss but if you watch you will find what you need.
Here is a photo of the decals I have. It shows both the ST and SS models. You only get one model per set, your choice of model. The SS/16 and ST/16 decal is a little different. The yellow on the shift plate is a little different color. Other then that they are the same. They are made from 9 year vinyl, I have sold many sets, everyone has been happy with them. $40 for the ST, $45 for the SS. you email me @

Yep, those sure are some fine looking tractors. I hope someday to be able to devote the time and energy to restoring one again.
Great Job!
