Steering issue Custom 6
I have a 1966 Custom 600 with steering issues. All front end parts are present and intact. I found that one of the two bolts on the rack/pinion plate was missimg. I replaced the nut and bolt with a new set, same size as the remaining one. However, I am not able to steer to the left. The gear on the steering shaft is not meshing with the half moon rack. I raised the front end, thinking gravity would help slide them together. Nope. I geased the unit up really good. Still nothing. What am I doing wrong? Can someone help me stop going in right hand circles, please?

Seems like the sun gear (half moon) is damaged in some way. The pinion is fine if you can turn right and go back straight.

Thanks, VW.....that was my thought. So I used my finger to get the grease up there. I did not feel and metal tears or rips. It acts like the half moon is too far to the front of the steering shaft. They dont want to mesh. I was mowing when I lost the steering control.

custom steering problem
Half moon is held on with roll pin, this hole oblongs out and steering becomes problematic. Many weld half moon to shaft, but only spot weld then you can grind weld if you need to remove.
