68 Custom steering Assembly
My first post here because I need help with my 68 10XL. I have broken the tractor down for restoration and found that the steering assembly shaft that runs underneath the tractor is in bad shape. The woodruff keyway in the shaft is broken away on one side. The shaft is mated to a sector gear that I have not figured out how to remove so I am wondering if any master Sears tractor mechanics can advise me on how to remove the sector gear from the shaft if it is possible. The shaft assembly part per the Sears diagram is 626A30A. The tractor model is 917.25261. It appears that the shaft is held on by a nut countersunk into the backside of the sector gear.

68 Custom 10XL Sreering Assembly
Thanks Georgia SS. I'll check EBay out again. I did go to a machinist who said making a new shaft would be no problem if I could remove the sector gear which is also sometimes referred to as a half moon gear.
It looks as though the gear may have been heat shrunk onto the shaft. I've seen where some say the gear is welded onto the shaft but I do not see any evidence of welding at the union. Another problem I have is the welded on tube of the rocker bar (front axle) has broken off so I need to get that fixed as well. After those problems are solved I should have a nice working Custom 10XL worthy of repainting. If anyone is familiar with how the sector gear is fixed to the end of the shaft during manufacturing it may help me figure out how to separate the two pieces. I'll try to post some images of my problem next.
